A Renovation for Cutting-Edge Research

At RPA Engineering, we’re passionate about helping businesses create the spaces they need to succeed. We collaborated with NeuBase Therapeutics on a unique project: transforming an office space into a state-of-the-art laboratory facility. They needed not just a functional lab space, but a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) laboratory, equipped to handle a wider range of research activities.

Planning the Infrastructure Upgrade

Our team of engineers performed a comprehensive mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design for NeuBase’s new space. This included planning for upgraded utility infrastructure to accommodate the specific needs of a BSL2 laboratory.

Equipping the Lab for Success

The design for NeuBase’s lab space incorporated cutting-edge features, including:

  • Fume exhaust hoods to safely vent harmful fumes and vapors
  • Biosafety cabinets to provide a controlled environment for working with pathogens
  • A central Millipore system for delivering high-purity deionized (DI) water
  • A distribution system for supplying essential laboratory gases throughout the space

Building in Tandem with the Bigger Project

NeuBase’s project coincided with a larger redevelopment effort for the entire building. RPA had already been tasked with designing the six-story office into a Life Sciences building. This meant that NeuBase’s specific needs had to be carefully integrated into the broader plan, ensuring seamless functionality within the larger facility.

The original design concept utilized existing HVAC unites to serve the new lab. However, it became apparent that the current electrical infrastructure could not support Neubase’s needs. This required an evaluation of the entire building and a new concept for both Neubase and the building. With the design timeline already incorporated into the lease for the incoming tenants, our team quickly and successfully adapted to the new compressed project.

By working closely with NeuBase, we were able to overcome the challenges of adapting an existing building and deliver a lab space that met their specific needs. This project is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovative engineering design.
