We’re proud to announce the promotion of Maclean Smith, PE, to Senior Project Manager at RPA Engineering. Since first joining RPA as an intern, Maclean has developed a comprehensive understanding of the project lifecycle. His career progression has taken him from supporting engineering design and drafting to serving as a lead engineer, making technical decisions, coordinating with project stakeholders, and building trusted relationships with clients.
Advancing Technical Expertise and Project Leadership
In his new role as Senior Project Manager, Maclean will continue combining hands-on technical involvement with responsibility for the broader business and organizational needs of each project.
His experience allows him to understand both the detailed engineering decisions that shape a design and the larger considerations that determine a project’s success, including cost, schedule, quality, communication, and client satisfaction. This promotion also reflects RPA’s commitment to developing project leaders who understand the technical complexities of the work while maintaining a clear focus on the client’s priorities and long-term goals.
We spoke with Maclean about his career progression, the qualities that contribute to successful project execution, and what this next step means to him.
How has your role evolved since you first joined RPA?
I first joined RPA as an intern and transitioned into a full-time position after graduation. Since then, my role has evolved in ways that have allowed me to experience many different aspects of the project lifecycle.
Early in my career, I gained valuable experience completing P&IDs and drafting overall layout drawings while working under the guidance of more senior engineers. As I gained experience, I progressed into roles where I was responsible for making design decisions and serving as the lead engineer.
As my role and client relationships have continued to grow, my responsibilities have expanded to include direct client interaction throughout the bidding, execution, and project closeout stages.
What do you think makes a project successful from the client’s perspective?
From the client’s perspective, successful project execution is always going to be focused on cost, schedule, and quality. Clients want a team that provides strong value while delivering the level of expertise their project requires. A client who knows that we are on their side, doing our best to maintain those three pillars, will continue trusting RPA on additional projects.
What is one lesson you’ve learned from working on complex or fast-moving projects?
One of the most important lessons I have learned is that communication can either resolve or prevent many of the issues that arise during project execution.
That communication may happen internally between departments during the design phase or externally with a client, vendor, or contractor. Maintaining good relationships with everyone involved creates an environment where open communication can occur before a concern develops into a major project issue.
What does this promotion to Senior Project Manager mean to you?
This promotion allows me to progress in my career in a way that aligns with my project experience and strengths as an engineer.
Many of the projects I currently support require a project manager who remains technically involved in the specifics while also maintaining an overall focus on the business side of the project.
I am looking forward to progressing in this role that still allows me to advance technically while having greater responsibility for the continued success of our projects and the clients we serve.
