Engineering the Future: Meet Our Summer Interns

Engineering the Future: Meet Our Summer Interns

This summer we’ve welcomed a new class of interns to our team—bright, motivated individuals ready to put their skills to the test in real-world projects. Over the past twelve weeks, they’ve worked alongside our engineers, gaining hands-on experience, and learning the ins and outs of our industry. From tackling design challenges to supporting client-focused solutions, these interns brought energy, curiosity, and a passion for problem-solving that made them a great addition to our collaborative culture.

We are also grateful to our team of Internship Mentors, who give so much of their time, expertise, and dedication to these young engineers!

Wyomissing Office

Naobi Chang

I’m Naobi, and I am a rising junior at Penn State University, studying Electrical Engineering. In my free time, I enjoy playing my guitar, building puzzles, doing embroidery, hiking, playing Minecraft, and learning new things.

During my time at RPA, I gained valuable knowledge and hands-on experience in electrical and design work. I worked with the National Electrical Code book and learned to use AutoCAD and Revit. I also had the opportunity to visit the Kawneer site. This internship experience gave me practical insights into field of electrical engineering within the engineering consulting industry. I learned how to interpret single-line diagrams, determine appropriate circuit breaker sizes, and design the placement of receptacles in different types of rooms.

Valerie Thompson

I am a student at Lehigh University going into my fourth year of the 5 Year Arts and Engineering Program. I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Theater. Outside of class, I participate in and help lead some dance clubs that focus on lyrical/jazz, tap dance, and swing dance, respectively. I think that my interests compliment each other well, and that knowledge from all areas of my life have been put to good use during this internship.

During this summer at RPA, I have been able to complete several 3-D models to use as placeholders in designs, help construct P&IDs for GE Aviation, work on a calculator for ideal gasses, and of course make good progress on our internship project. I was also able to go on site at GE to really see the machines that I was drawing P&IDs for. It was a great way to understand and visualize what my work was for, and I’m so glad I was able to experience and learn everything that I have this summer.

I have just graduated from Boston University in the spring with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I love playing volleyball, traveling, playing video games, personal finance, and trying foods from every cuisine! I also have a twin brother!

In my time at RPA I have worked on LOTO procedures for a furnace at Materion, 3D modeled pipe supports, actuators, valves in Solidworks for a Revit Family, and drafted P&IDs for autoclaves in AutoCAD. I also made a Bluebeam PDF RPA P&ID toolbox for the mechanical group to use during client review meetings. Additionally, I drafted a Dropped Objects Safety Policy for RPA. Throughout the summer, I worked on the Teams Connected Lamp (Intern Project) with the Intern Team. It has been a rewarding experience.

I will also be starting as a structural engineer at General Dynamics Electric Boat in the fall!

Pittsburgh Office

Ethan Martin

I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. This summer I have taken on both the role of project and mechanical engineer. Half of the time I am doing Project Engineer work, including drafting proposals, responding to RFI’s and submittals, creating PEP forms, and going on site visits.

The other half I am working as a Mechanical Engineer, doing load calculations, creating zoning plans, designing HVAC layouts with diffuser sizing, duct sizing, and VAV sizing, as well as doing punch lists.

In my free time I like to go to the gym, play basketball, play golf, or go skiing.

Thank you Naobi, Valerie, Andrew, and Ethan for being with us this summer! We are grateful to be a part of your path to a career in engineering!
